The Muddy Mutt
Amanda Lattanzio, owner
Who doesn’t like a good scrub, shampoo and brush? You’d think I’m talking about a salon, but these are all services provided by The Muddy Mutt, a dog hygiene facility near Shirlington. While the Muddy Mutt offers salon-like services and grooming, you can also self-wash your dog. Choose from a paw trim, tooth brushing, nail trim, sanitary trim, and other services. Check the schedule as most days you can walk in (except Thursdays) or book your appointment online. Choose we-wash or self-wash. If you decide on a we-wash option, count on leaving your dog off for about 2-2.5 hours. Time depends on size of dog and fur length. A self-wash lets you walk in the shop and bathe your pup yourself. Just remember that last call is at 6:15 p.m. Most interesting item on the menu: blueberry facial. This is a special shampoo used on tearstains, especially white-haired dogs such as the Maltese and Bichon, to minimize staining that occurs from accumulated tears.
Owner, Amanda Lattanzio has always been the type of person who will stop to pet someone else’s dog. So, when the previous owner of Muddy Mutt wanted to focus on other things in 2018, Amanda pounced at the opportunity to buy it. With limited parking, some customers park on the other side of the footbridge and walk over for a wash or groom after the dogs have exercised in the Shirlington Dog Park or Four Mile Run. There are Capital Bikeshare stations nearby, plus the popular 45-mile long W&OD bike trail which starts in Shirlington. Four ART bus routes serve the area (72, 75, 77, 87) as well as three Metrobus lines (10B, 23B, 23T). Several of Amanda’s employees walk to work. When asked what type of customer visits the Muddy Dog, Amanda responds that it’s all kinds. But since/during COVID, she has noticed a lot of new clients with puppies. She sees new clientele as an opportunity to educate them on their breed and how often they should be groomed.
