Phoenix Bikes CollageA community mainstay since 2007, Phoenix Bikes recently celebrated 15 years of providing community service to underprivileged youth, while offering a full-service bicycle repair shop to the community. Executive Director Emily Gage says it’s not just any bike shop. Phoenix Bikes empowers youth through programs such as the Earn-a-Bike, Paid Shop Internship and Saturday Bike Rides. “We refurbish and resell bikes. But it all hinges on our youth by harnessing the power of bikes to help them build passion, purpose and a place in the community,” says Emily. It even has its own junior racing team, Team Phoenix, where team members race cyclocross in the fall and compete in garage races in the spring. All programs are free to youth in grades 6 through 12. Recently a young student from Eritrea completed the Earn-a-Bike program and stayed on board to complete the internship. Now he’s racing cyclocross with Team Phoenix — all opportunities not available to him in his home country.

Phoenix Bikes hosts several fundraisers through a gala, Bikes & Bowties, and a century ride, Raise & Ride. There’s also the popular Arlington Treasure Hunt, a community ride that takes folks to interesting spots through Arlington.

Earn-a-Bike

Students work to complete a program to earn their own bike. They learn about bike repair, problem solving skills and at the end of the program, they earn their own bike.

Paid Shop Internship

For students aged 15-18, Phoenix Bikes offers them the opportunity to learn the business side of running a bike shop. This program runs the students through the gamut of skills such as writing up tickets, giving shop tours, making sales, and keeping inventory.

Saturday Bike Rides

There’s no better way to instill going car free than actively participating in a bike ride. Students get a chance to try out bikes they’ve built, learn bike riding safety skills and socially interact with other members. Conveniently located along the front corner of the Arlington Mill Community Center, Phoenix Bikes is barely a block away from the popular Four Mile Run Trail. Several employees either bike or take a scooter to get to work. Convenient bus routes that run directly in front of the community center/bike shop, take you on Columbia Pike and also connect with Pentagon Metro, Virginia Square Metro and Shirlington Transit Center. Have a bike you want to donate? Phoenix Bikes receives close to 1,000 bikes a year that support the programs and offers bikes to those less privileged. If you’re an avid commuter or bike regularly, Phoenix Bikes offers accessories, bike repair and more. The bike shop also donates nearly 180 bikes to those in need of transportation in the community.
