Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative, located on the corner of Washington Boulevard and Pershing Drive, is a short walk from Clarendon. Vélocity moved into what was previously a local bike shop, so nothing was needed in the way of renovation. And the vibe of a local community partner continues through the service they offer. From broken spokes to flat tires and truing wheels to bike tune-ups — their two workbenches stay busy. Vélocity is a non-profit organization made up of seven board members with shop manager, Jack Camino, running day-to-day operations. With the original location still in Del Ray (Alexandria), they decided to open a presence in Arlington when this space became available. Vélocity works on the principle of a community-based and volunteer-run model. Many bicycles (and parts) are donated. Shop mechanics work on donated bikes and make them rideable again. So, if you don’t want a brand-new bike and are looking for a bargain, this is your place. Jack says the most popular bike sold is the hybrid, but surprisingly, folks come in looking for BMX. Then there are those who want a road bike for weekend riding on the more than 50 miles of trails available throughout Arlington. Other big sellers: rear panniers for long commutes, helmets, U-locks, dog trailers and of course — inner tubes for flat tires.

There are four employees at Vélocity and Jack use Metro to get to work (with his bike). When Jack meets with a customer, he emphasizes educating them on the proper bicycle and setup. He gives the example of buying a bike online; they can’t try it out in person. Nobody will help them adjust the seat height nor will they fit you to the proper size bike. The bike shop is conveniently located close to bike lanes/paths, is a short walk to Clarendon and several buses (ART 42, 77 and Metrobus 4B) pass by the entrance.
