Ruthie's All Day

Matt Hill, co-owner/chef

Chef Matt Hill has literally cornered 5th Street South and South Glebe Road with an eatery that pays homage to his grandmother. Along with co-owner Todd Salvadore, they have created a restaurant that serves everything from a cup of joe (they use Counter Culture) and biscuit in the morning to a sit-down meal for supper and everything in between — thus the reference in the name “Ruthie’s All Day.” It’s southern cooking where, in Matt’s words, “everything (on the menu) is touched/kissed by fire or smoke.” They put the wood fire grill to hard work and utilize wood smokers for a unique flavor that makes its way to just about everything on the menu. Previously the culinary director for Car-Free Diet partners such as Lyon Hall, Liberty BBQ and Northside Social — Matt found this paint store location and quickly went to work adding his North Carolina charm and roots to the menu and décor.

With close to 50 employees, Matt says about 80% of them use public transportation, walk or carpool to get to work. This takes the burden off the limited parking and Matt actually encourages patrons to take public transportation. Matt and his wife live in Arlington and he has worked within the County for the past seven years. Despite being further away from Clarendon and Ballston, this Arlington Heights Historical District location is easily accessible by foot, bike, or bus. Take the ART 41, Metrobus 10A or 23ABT. A Capital Bikeshare station is also located one block away. So, what do you order once you get there? Try the beef brisket, which is seasoned and smoked for 14 hours. It’s served as a sandwich, as a plate, by the pound, or at brunch accompanied with eggs benedict. They even make a hash out of it. Beyond the flavors, Matt’s goal is to also provide hospitality first and make patrons feel welcome, providing them with a great experience. That’s the reason he got into this business in the first place.
