When you walk inside Mumu Cafe, a “Made with Love” sign on an ivy background immediately greets you. Located behind Mom’s Organic Market, this unassuming space is home to a sandwich shop with a variety of acai bowls, smoothies and coffee. Owner Jermaine Williams, gives a nod to his native northern New Jersey with items such as the pastrami cheese melt and (nearby Philadelphia’s) steak & cheese. He wanted to create a café where there was plenty of variety on the menu. Given that he lives next door and with several nearby high-rise apartments, he was out to create a local hangout spot complete with sandwiches, coffee and, beer on tap — essentially something for all to enjoy. After working in the IT industry, Jermaine decided to switch to the service industry, becoming a bartender and later a banquet manager at a local hotel. As for the name of the café, it comes from his son Jace Musashi’s nickname “Mumu.”

When asked why Jermaine chose to go into the food industry, he said it chose him. And what better location choice than right near a bike path and major thoroughfare. Rosslyn is a short walk down the hill. There’s also a Capital Bikeshare station on the other side of the building and Courthouse Metro is less than a 10-minute walk. This explains the influx of cyclists that visit his shop for a quick bite before continuing on their ride. Add to that the two bus routes (Metrobus 3Y and ART 55) that connect you to either East Falls Church or Rosslyn, and you’ve covered every mode of public transit. So, whether it’s a smoothie, a beer flight or a flatbread pizza — stop by Mumu’s Cafe and “bring a friend,” adds Jermaine.
